Help Rebuild After Flooding

Who: Volunteers with general construction skills & those willing to learn ages 16+
What: Rebuilding residential homes (insulations, drywall, skirting, etc.)
Where: Antietam Valley area
When: Thursday, June 20
Why: To help our neighbors recover after damage from flooding in July 2023

The Antietam Valley Unmet Needs Roundtable exists to help survivors of the July 9, 2023, storms in Berks County, PA. It is a partnership of Antietam Valley Community Partnership, Pennside Presbyterian Church, Lutheran Disaster Response, and PA SouthEast Conference, UCC.

Antietam Valley Long Term Recovery Group (AVLTRG)

General Information for Volunteers

What types of volunteer opportunities are available?

  • Most volunteer opportunities are related to typical flood recovery work, including laying adhesive flooring, demolition, removing household items, hanging drywall, and painting. 
  • Specialty volunteers are also needed for things like installing cabinetry, plumbing, hanging doors, and roofing
  • Other volunteer opportunities include providing lunches, delivering water to volunteers, and help with overall coordination
  • Single day and several day opportunities are available.
  • Individuals and/or groups are invited to join volunteer efforts. Registration is required. 

Is housing provided for our team?

Yes, housing is available for teams traveling from outside the area at two local churches. 

Are youth allowed to serve?

Yes! 

  • Volunteers must be at least 16 years old, and part of a group. 
  • We require a ratio of at least 1 adult for every 3 youth (16 -18 years old).
  • We require 2 adults in the presence of any youth (16 -18 years old) . Therefore, you will need to have 2 adults on each work site.
  • We need at least 1 person per work site to be skilled enough to lead the team with minimal supervision. Our construction manager will give direction as needed but will not stay on site at all times.
  • Our staff does not stay with the team overnight, therefore we ask that you plan accordingly for chaperones.

How are the projects identified?

  • The AVLTRG reviews applications presented by disaster case managers on behalf of survivor households. 
  • Our construction manager lines up the project and ensures the materials are on site when your team Is ready to start working.
  • We provide tools but you are welcome to bring your own.

Other Info!

  • We plan single work days and advertise them as broadly as possible, however if you or your team have dates in mind that work best for your, please let us know! We are flexible!
  • Background clearances may be requested.
